Definition: The second is defined by fixing the caesium frequency at exactly 9,192,631,770 hertz — the duration of 9,192,631,770 cycles of radiation of the caesium-133 atom. One minute is 60 seconds and one hour is 3,600 seconds.

Seconds to Minutes Conversion Table
Seconds to minutes is the most frequently searched time conversion: divide the seconds by 60 to get decimal minutes. The mm:ss column shows the same value the way a stopwatch displays it.
| Seconds | Minutes (decimal) | Minutes : Seconds |
|---|---|---|
| 30 | 0.5 | 0:30 |
| 60 | 1 | 1:00 |
| 90 | 1.5 | 1:30 |
| 120 | 2 | 2:00 |
| 180 | 3 | 3:00 |
| 300 | 5 | 5:00 |
| 450 | 7.5 | 7:30 |
| 600 | 10 | 10:00 |
| 900 | 15 | 15:00 |
| 1,200 | 20 | 20:00 |
| 1,381 | 23.02 | 23:01 |
| 1,500 | 25 | 25:00 |
| 1,800 | 30 | 30:00 |
| 2,700 | 45 | 45:00 |
| 3,600 | 60 | 60:00 |
Working the other way, multiply minutes by 60 to get seconds: 23.5 minutes × 60 = 1,410 seconds. For example, 1,381 seconds = 23.02 minutes = 23 minutes 1 second.
Seconds to Time Format (hh:mm:ss)
Converting raw seconds into a readable hh:mm:ss clock format is the most common time conversion. The algorithm divides by shrinking units: hours first, then the remainder into minutes, and what is left is seconds.
Example: convert 9,782 seconds
- Hours: 9,782 ÷ 3,600 = 2 (remainder 2,582 s)
- Minutes: 2,582 ÷ 60 = 43 (remainder 2 s)
- Seconds: 2
- Result: 02:43:02
Quick lookup table
| 60 seconds | 00:01:00 |
| 600 seconds | 00:10:00 |
| 1,800 seconds | 00:30:00 |
| 3,600 seconds | 01:00:00 |
| 7,200 seconds | 02:00:00 |
| 86,400 seconds | 24:00:00 (1 day) |
| 1900 seconds | 00:31:40 |
| 1970 seconds | 00:32:50 |

Decimal Hours to Hours & Minutes (HH:MM)
Timesheets and payroll systems record working time in decimal hours — 7.5 means 7 hours 30 minutes. To read a decimal value as clock time, keep the whole hours and multiply the decimal part by 60: 17.53 → 17 h + 0.53 × 60 = 31.8 min ≈ 17:32.
| Decimal hours | Hours : Minutes | Minutes only |
|---|---|---|
| 0.25 | 0:15 | 15 min |
| 0.5 | 0:30 | 30 min |
| 0.75 | 0:45 | 45 min |
| 7.25 | 7:15 | 435 min |
| 7.5 | 7:30 | 450 min |
| 8.25 | 8:15 | 495 min |
| 8.5 | 8:30 | 510 min |
| 16.5 | 16:30 | 990 min |
| 17.25 | 17:15 | 1,035 min |
| 17.5 | 17:30 | 1,050 min |
| 17.53 | 17:32 | 1,052 min |
| 17.75 | 17:45 | 1,065 min |
| 18.5 | 18:30 | 1,110 min |
| 19.5 | 19:30 | 1,170 min |
| 19.56 | 19:34 | 1,174 min |
| 24.75 | 24:45 | 1,485 min |
Working the other way, convert clock time back to decimal hours by dividing the minutes by 60: 17:32 → 17 + 32 ÷ 60 ≈ 17.53. When the minutes do not divide evenly, round to two decimals — that is the precision payroll systems expect.
How Each Time Format Is Used
Unix timestamp
Seconds since 1970-01-01 00:00:00 UTC. The lingua franca of databases, APIs, and logs because it is a single timezone-independent number. JavaScript usually adds a * 1000 because it works in milliseconds internally.
ISO 8601
The international standard (2026-08-16T12:00:00Z). Machine-sortable, unambiguous, and required by most modern REST APIs. The trailing Z marks UTC.
UTC string
RFC 7231 format (Sat, 16 Aug 2026 12:00:00 GMT) — still used in HTTP headers and email (Date header). Human-readable and always UTC.
Local readable time
What you see on a clock, e.g. 2026-08-16 20:00:00 in Shanghai for a 12:00 UTC instant. Always pair a local time with its timezone, or it is meaningless across regions.
Time Converter FAQ
How do I convert seconds to minutes?
Divide the number of seconds by 60 — the result is decimal minutes. For example, 1,381 seconds ÷ 60 = 23.02 minutes, which is 23 minutes 1 second. For separate parts: minutes = floor(1381 ÷ 60) = 23 and seconds = 1381 mod 60 = 1. The seconds-to-minutes table above lists the most common values.
What is a Unix timestamp?
Unix timestamp is the number of seconds elapsed since January 1, 1970 00:00:00 UTC. It is timezone-independent for storage and comparison.
Can I convert ISO 8601 and UTC strings?
Yes. The converter supports Unix seconds, Unix milliseconds, ISO 8601, UTC strings, and browser-local readable formats.
Does timezone conversion account for DST?
Yes. Global conversion uses `Intl.DateTimeFormat` with IANA timezone IDs, including seasonal daylight saving changes.
How do I convert seconds to hh:mm:ss by hand?
Divide the seconds by 3,600 for hours, divide the remainder by 60 for minutes, and keep the rest as seconds. For example, 9,782 seconds is 2 hours, 43 minutes, 2 seconds (02:43:02).
How many seconds are in a day, a week, or a year?
A day is 86,400 seconds, a week is 604,800 seconds, and a 365-day year is 31,536,000 seconds. A leap year has 31,622,400 seconds.
Why do Unix timestamps in JavaScript look 1000x bigger?
JavaScript's Date works in milliseconds, while a classic Unix timestamp counts seconds. Multiply seconds by 1000 (or divide milliseconds by 1000) to convert between them — this tool does both automatically.
What is the difference between UTC and GMT?
GMT is a timezone (mean solar time at Greenwich), while UTC is a time standard kept by atomic clocks. For everyday conversion they show the same clock time, which is why the labels are often used interchangeably.
How do I convert decimal hours to hours and minutes?
Keep the whole number as hours and multiply the decimal part by 60 for minutes: 17.53 → 17 hours + 0.53 × 60 = 31.8 ≈ 32 minutes, so 17:32. This is the format timesheets and payroll systems use — see the decimal hours table above.
Why do timesheets use decimal hours instead of hh:mm?
Payroll systems multiply hours by an hourly rate, and 7:30 cannot be multiplied directly while 7.5 can. Most systems track time in 15-minute increments, which map cleanly to 0.25 (15 min), 0.5 (30 min), and 0.75 (45 min).
